My Chinese Kitchen, Burwood

Living in the inner west, there is never a lack of choice when it comes to casual and affordable dining options. We're lucky enough to be a hop, skip and jump away from fabulous Korean in Strathfield, Vietnamese in Flemington, Italian in Leichhardt and if you want to branch a bit further out, Lebanese in Punchbowl. It's funny because the hub and I actually don't really eat in Burwood itself all that often, and the other night, when we went for a walk around the neighbourhood, we came across My Chinese Kitchen.

It was late on a Saturday evening and most restaurants were emptying for the night, yet My Chinese Kitchen, located at the southern end of Burwood Rd, was still a hive of activity. K and I stopped at the window to look at the menu and read the newspaper review of the restaurant, and were really impressed with what we saw. Most of the Chinese restaurants in Burwood (and there are plenty) tend to be a little old, shabby, tiny in size and not particularly pretty but this one was new, clean, bright and big - and I loved that they didn't try to cram as many tables as they could fit in! Reading the review (which can be accessed here: http://www.taste.com.au/news+features/articles/3057/my+chinese+kitchen), K and I immediately committed to trying the restaurant sometime in the week.

On a weeknight, when we had both worked back late and wanted something quick and local, we came back to My Chinese Kitchen and were not disappointed. The restaurant offers a set price option for tables of 2, 3 or 4 which are fantastic value: picking the one for 2 diners, we selected two main dishes which were served with a starter of soup, steamed rice and steamed vegies for the price of $33.80. The dishes came out from the kitchen promptly, and we were off to a great start with the soup! Studded with white bait, the soup was one that I had never seen at any Chinese restaurant before and was very tasty.

We had ordered two mains, one of Nanjing beef hotpot and the other shredded pork. Both came out quickly, and they were both delicious. The beef was tender, fell apart at the touch and melted in the mouth. It was served in a claypot with glass noodles and some greens, and the hubby demolished it in no time. The shredded pork was my choice, and the pork itself was tender - a great textural contrast with the capsicum which still retained its crunch, lots of ginger and some black fungus - all served in this spicy / sweet sauce. The serving sizes were very generous and we struggled to finish our two dishes.

We're happy to have found a place just a short walk away from home to have quick, cheap, but still tasty dinners. If you're in the local neighbourhood, drop in - you're guaranteed a good feed.
